"Hangeth Thou In There Baby"

Kay Arthur, a Bible teacher, author, and christian speaker whom I highly respect has often exhorted her students to ... "hangeth thou in there!" Her encouraging words have never ceased to bring a smile to my face. This morning, however, God forever burned those words into my heart. Allow me to explain.

For months, I have been fighting what seemed like a losing battle. An unfamiliar, and down-right unpleasant opponent had come into my camp and would not budge! So armed and loaded for bear, I set out to win the battle with the one I will simply call, "my middle-age-middle". I purchased a pedometer and faithfully used it to daily measure my steps. I began keeping a food journal and carefully examined every morsel I put into my mouth. I even made myself accountable to a group of like-minded individuals by signing up for a weight training "boot camp" class which met 3x a week.

Day after day, week after week, and month after month I was faithful. I was diligently doing everything I knew to be right! Yet, my opponent continued to mock me. Sure, I was becoming stronger, and healthier, and feeling better than I had felt in years ... yet, I was discouraged.

Why? Because I was not getting the results I expected. I was not getting what I wanted. I was not getting the return on my investment I had anticipated. I wanted what I wanted and I wanted it now.

This is when God spoke. Right there, in the most unlikely of places, the gym! Smack dab in the middle of my "Kettle Bell" boot camp class! The God of The Universe gently, and lovingly, reminded me of the danger of my expectations. He reminded me how easily I can become discouraged, and ultimately defeated when I don't get my anticipated result. He reminded of the importance of endurance. He reminded me I am a needy woman, a woman who desperately needs Him. A woman who is learning to wait for His timing. A woman who is learning to hangeth thou in there. Irregardless of the outcome.

Sat(her)day - Aaahhh, Chick-Fil-A ...

This morning it was quite necessary for me to get out of the house. I needed some space ... Space from all the weekend distractions of home. You know things like ... closets, and cabinets, and drawers, and a garage (oh my!) that have become so cluttered they sometimes keep me awake at night. (Sorry if this comes as a shock to you but yes, I battle with clutter!)

So I did what any woman in my position would do - I ran away from home! It was the only way I was going to meet my "Sat(her)day" deadline! On the way out the door, I grabbed the September edition of "P31 Woman" and was free, free, FREE! I would escape to a place where they are always kind, always happy to see me, and where its their "pleasure" to serve me! Chick-Fil-A, of course!

Followng a brief surprise encounter with one of my dearest friends, I settled into a quiet table and began to devour my chicken minis and my "P31 Woman" magazine. It was a nice 30 minute diversion. And I am once again glad I opened my BIG mouth a few weeks ago making myself accountable to a weekly "Sat(her)day" blog.

I enjoyed my time out of the house, and was refreshed from a mentally exhausting week. But it got even better, join me on Monday for the rest of the story... :- )

Retreat, A Treat Indeed.

Every April the women in my home church set aside one weekend for the sole purpose of "retreating" together. It has become a spring highlight for many of our women (including myself) and a date that we gladly save from year to year.

What is retreat? Webster's defines it as: an act or process of withdrawing especially from what is difficult, dangerous, or disagreeable to a place of privacy or safety.

From this definition we see three important elements of retreat.

  1. Retreat Requires Action - it's an intentional, strategic move

  2. Retreat Has a Specific Purpose - to ensure victory in battle

  3. Retreat Has a Specific Location - private & safe

You may be thinking... I'm not in battle. Oh but yes... As a Christian, dear one, you certainly are. And every good soldier learns the value of a strategic retreat.

When is the last time you deliberately set aside the time for restoration, replenishment, and refreshment. Have you ever?

The God of the Universe is calling you to retreat with Him. Will you accept His invitation?

Determine today, that you will do whatever is necessary, to finish well.

  • If you are not connected with a local church - get connected.

  • If you are not sure if your local church offers an annual retreat - ask.

  • If your local church offers an annual retreat - go. You won't regret it!
